This article left out some key pieces of information which would almost certainly change the way a reader views the CRB application process. In 2022, House Bill 2721 significantly limited the power of the Civilian Review Board (CRB) in Phoenix. One of the key provisions of the bill requires that members of civilian oversight boards must complete substantial police training. Specifically, they must either attend a community college police academy or complete 80 hours of training certified by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board. Furthermore, the bill restricts the independence of these boards by mandating that a significant portion of their members be law enforcement officers, thereby diluting the civilian oversight intended to ensure police accountability. This article says, and I quote: "Before the city created the board, council members debated who should be eligible. They decided not to allow current or former law enforcement or people with claims or lawsuits against the police department going back 10 years." Why would the author list this in the article without specifying they threw this out and packed the CRB with former cops? Why would the author leave out the 80 hours of police training necessary in order to be eligible? This article was terrible. It was unresearched, lazy and unprofessional. If a state law passed in 2022 nullifies the whole story and the author fails to mention it, why would your readers waste time with it? Where are your editors KJZZ? Did they take any time to research the article before they signed off on it? The misinformation in this article is so bad it should be considered an attempt to hide the law that gutted the CRB. You intentionally attempt to paint the CRB as if it really was concerned about police accountability. This couldn't be further from the truth. The CRB as an independent reviewer of police behavior does not exist.

This is how the Phoenix Police are supposed to do their job. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The DOJ investigated the department and found that they discriminate against people of color and the homeless. More information can be found on Google. I hope some meaningful changes can be made.
